The Writing Trail: Developing confident, creative and independent writers in Year 2

The Writing Trail: Developing confident, creative and independent writers in Year 2 | BSB Sanlitun - Year 2 Writing Trail

Every great piece of writing begins with a journey! In Year 2, we are helping children understand that becoming a successful writer is about much more than putting words on a page. Just like real authors, our young writers need time to explore ideas, experiment with language, plan, collaborate and reflect on their work.

To support this journey, we use ‘The Writing Trail’, a visual approach that guides children through six important stops: Immerse, Explore, Plan, Collaborate, Compose and Reflect.

Each stop has a purpose. We begin by immersing ourselves in a high-quality text, getting to know the story, characters and author's choices. We then explore the ingredients of effective writing, considering the genre, audience and purpose. Who are we writing for? Why are we writing? What makes a reader want to keep turning the pages?

Along the trail, children engage in collaborative and independent activities, including drama, role play, storytelling, discussion and shared writing. These experiences help them develop ideas, rehearse sentences and experiment with ambitious vocabulary before writing independently.

Why is the journey important?

Research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) highlights the importance of spoken language, vocabulary and explicitly teaching writing strategies. By making the writing process visual, familiar and repeated, The Writing Trail gives children clear steps to follow and strategies they can return to. As their confidence grows, they begin to take greater ownership of their writing, understanding that authors can revisit ideas, make changes and improve their work along the way.

Our current writing adventure: The Storm Whale

Our Year 2 writers are currently exploring The Storm Whale by Benji Davies, discovering how carefully chosen words and illustrations create atmosphere and emotion.

Throughout this Writing Trail, We have used thinking routines and immersive experiences to explain what we See, Think and Wonder about the front cover and opening to the story, developing the children’s skills of inference and prediction. The children have also used freeze frames to step into the characters' shoes, exploring their feelings and generating expressive vocabulary, and created story maps with actions to retell key events, from the raging storm to the discovery of the poor, beached whale.

Now, inspired by the original story, our young authors are preparing to create their own versions, introducing a different sea creature into the narrative. Through collaborative planning and story mapping, they are sharing imaginative ideas, collecting ambitious vocabulary and experimenting with descriptive phrases to bring their stories to life.

These shared experiences provide valuable preparation for independent writing, giving every child the ideas, language and confidence to create a story of their own.
Ultimately, The Writing Trail helps children understand not just what to write, but how to write and why their choices matter. By valuing the journey as much as the finished piece, we hope to nurture confident, thoughtful and enthusiastic young authors.

We cannot wait to see where their writing journeys take them next!
