Performing Arts in Primary: Creating, Collaborating & Performing

Performing Arts in Primary: Creating, Collaborating & Performing | BSB Sanlitun - Performing Arts in Primary

Collaboration is at the heart of Performing Arts this term! Across Primary, our students are developing their musical and dance skills while learning how to listen, communicate, take turns, share ideas and create together.

Our Performing Arts curriculum is also enriched through our ongoing collaboration with Juilliard school from New York. Ms Iva and Ms Alice are in constant communication with Juilliard specialists Bryan Drye and Hilary Easton, working together to ensure that our Music and Dance curriculum is well balanced, engaging and enriched with a wide range of Juilliard Creative Classroom activities, approaches and tools.

In Year 6, students are beginning to explore the world of popular music through four-chord progressions, using keyboards to create their own backing tracks and developing their understanding of how musicians work together to build a complete piece of music.

Our Year 5 students are already busy preparing for their production, developing their singing, dancing, performance and ensemble skills as they learn how to contribute confidently to a larger performance.

In Years 3 and 4, a variety of music and rhythm games are helping students develop their ability to listen carefully, respond to others and take turns. We are also encouraging them to ask questions, be curious and develop a growing interest in how music works.

Our younger musicians in Year 2 enjoy playing together in small ensembles using a range of percussion instruments, learning how their individual parts can contribute to a shared musical performance. In Year 1, students are already showing fantastic collaboration skills, demonstrating respect for one another and listening carefully before joining in with their instruments.

Our Year 3 and 4 Dance block is also well underway. Students are developing their locomotion and coordination skills, while exploring pathways, use of space and how movement can be combined and performed with others. Through dance, they are learning not only to move with greater control and confidence, but also to respond to and collaborate with their classmates.

From our youngest musicians to our oldest performers, we are encouraging every student to listen, contribute, create and perform together — building both their Performing Arts skills and the confidence to be a great collaborator.
